Oprah and Type 2 diabetes

Did you all hear that Oprah's show on February 5th will be devoted to type 2 diabetes? As a benefit to all of her viewers, Oprah is partnering with Walgreens to offer free diabetes testing over the next two weeks. Check out the Walgreen's website to find a location near you.

Why do I care about type 2 diabetes? Because as my doctor says, "birds of a feather flock together". With a brother with type 1 diabetes, I'm at increased risk for the 2nd version. Add to that the fact that my grandmother was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

Why should you care about diabetes? Untreated diabetes can lead to:
  • heart disease
  • stroke
  • blindness
  • kidney disease
  • amputation
  • e.d.
Diabetes care costs Americans $174 billion a year.

  1. PCOS, which I have been diagnosed with, is related to Diabetes and has to do with insulin resistance. I get checked for Type 2 Diabetes yearly. My brother also has Type 1 Diabetes, as you know and Type 2 Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and PCOS are all related to Type 1 Diabetes.

You are going to Seattle? Cool! I hope you have a great time! You really, really need to come to Utah sometime though! We miss you guys!

  2. Agreed. Chris' grandpa died last year from sepsis caused by his last leg being amputated due to his POOOOOOOOOOR management (if you can call it that) of his Type 2 Diabetes. Really overweight, totally insulin resistant, etc. Sad stuff when you can control it with diet, exercise, and a pill. I love Biggest Loser and pretty much everyone on there didn't realize they had diabetes. Blood sugar issues are an obvious issue in our family whether diabetes or hypoglycemia.
